Review: Vengeance of Vampirella #4

Vengeance of Vampirella¬†#4 was released by Dynamite last week, and once again the creative team on this book doesn’t disappoint. Michael Sta. Maria again turns in some excellent work. I love his very classic take on Vampirella. Meanwhile, Tom Sniegoski continues to pull us along on this post-apocalyptic tale as Vampirella begins to get her feet wet after her return while her enemies plot against her.

The issue begins with Pendragon and Vampirella returning to the Passion “ship” in orbit around the Earth. This is Vampirella’s first encounter with Passion since her return and is naturally surprised by what she has become. This issue really gives us a taste of what Passion can do and probably an idea of what we can expect from her going forward. We see Vampirella in action as she attempts to find six necromages that are keeping the planet covered in shadow. Passion accompanies her in the form of four female warriors. My favorite moment of the issue is when they help defend Vampirella by forming a temporary suit of armor for her. Sta. Maria’s art really sings here and I love the design of the armor. It only makes this one brief appearance, but I’m hoping we’ll see more stuff like this in future issues.

When we aren’t reading about what Vampirella is up do, we follow the scheming of Nyx and Hemorrage as they attempt to lure Vampirella out of hiding. They eventually realize that she has destroyed the necromages, which sets up a confrontation between her and hemorrage. How that will play out is something we’ll have to wait until next issue to see. It will be good to see her face her old foe again, so issue 5 will definitely not be one to miss. I’m not sure what Pendragon’s role will be in the next issue, but I’m sure at some point we will see him in action against the big bad guys too, and that’s something will be interesting. With his new abilities from Passion, it creates a new dynamic between he and Vampirella that we’ve not seen before and I think it’s pretty intriguing.

For now we can just wait patiently for the next installment!
