Review: Vampirella/Red Sonja #8

The Vampirella/Red Sonja series returned to shelves post-pandemic pause with issue 8 by Jordie Bellaire, Drew Miss, Rebecca Nalty, and Becca Carey.

This issue continues the story with Vampirella and Red Sonja in New York City 1920. Vampirella has been taken by the villain Blue Baby (not sure if he’s supposed to be an elven creature or Nosferatu or what) and Red Sonja is trying to find her by working with corrupt police force. Sonja finds Vampirella performing in stage in a night club but under the hypnotic influence of her captor. After a fight breaks out, both heroines find themselves unconscious and then on the next page we find Vampirella alive and well on…Drakulon, with Red Sonja just waking up in a bed there.

It’s very hard to understand where this whole story arc is headed. That could be a good or bad thing depending on the author’s intention, but I’m hoping all of these seemingly separate arcs in different times/locations will be tied together at some point. Right now it feels like we’re getting all of these little vignettes that are never carried to completion before the characters are whisked away by the generation stone.

Also, it seems to be a trend lately across the Vampirella books to return in some form or fashion to Drakulon. It’s probably just a coincidence, but because we’ve seen this in other books lately, I find myself less intrigued by the latest development in V/RS. I guess we’ll see how it plays out next issue!
