Review: Vampirella/Red Sonja #4

This issue surprised me a bit. After issue 3 I was looking forward to to seeing what Vampirella and Red Sonja did next, but that is not what #4 is about. In fact, Vampirella does not appear in this issue at all!

Rather than continue where the last issue left off, writer Jordie Belaire pauses and uses this issue as a flashback to give us some background on Red Sonja. He answers the question of how she receives the Generation Stone which caused her to end up in 1969. Without giving the entire story away, Sonja finds herself inside the house of a witch. The house is filled with objects from other time periods, which tips us off to the fact that this witch can somehow jump through time. Sonja has compassion for the witch who is fatally wounded. In her dying moments she passes the Generation Stone to Sonja.

In the absence of Vampirella, we still get a solid Red Sonja story and that’s fine with me. I think the fanbases of these characters overlap a lot so most people won’t mind this departure. However, if you really missed Vampi this month, it looks like issue 5 will take place in New York City, 1969 and be a similar flashback issue focused on your favorite Drakulonian, so be sure to check that out!
