Review: Jose Gonzalez 50th Anniversary Vampirella Statue

I just got my hands on the new Vampirella statue based on the art of Jose Gonzalez from the famous Warren-era poster. I ordered this one through Dynamite’s Kickstarter campaign. I’m not sure if these are available through stores yet, but they should be soon if they aren’t already.

I really think this is a very well done statue. The sculpt is good and the paint apps on mine are pretty much perfect. The lines of the costume are crisp, which is one area that can often suffer from jagged edges or the red color not meeting the flesh tones correctly. Likewise, the bat logo is beautifully painted with no over paint onto the red or vice-versa. The flesh tones and face were one area I was a little worried about from seeing the promotional pictures. She seemed a bit too pale and something about the color of the cheeks looked a little funny. In-hand, it looks great.

Since this is based on such an iconic image, of course we have to look at how accurately Dynamite was able to translate that to 3D. It isn’t perfect, but I don’t think it ever could be. The pose seems right on the money to me. The only area that falls a bit short for me is the facial expression, which is also probably the most difficult to pull off. The statue has more of a pouty or even playful look compared to the more sultry expression in the Jose Gonzalez artwork. Not a big deal to me, but it’s worth pointing out.

Now for the technical details on this piece. The statue is made of cold cast porcelain and measures about 12.5 inches in height. One exception are the bat wings which are made of plastic, probably to minimize breakage. The statue comes in two pieces: the figure, which is pre-attached to the bat logo base, and the right arm, which holds the bat. The arm attaches snugly with a magnet where her arm bracelet is so there are no seam lines. The standard edition that I’m reviewing here has an edition size of 706. There are several other variants of this statue as well with varying edition sizes.

So overall a very nice piece for any Vampirella collector. I would say this is one of the better statues out there of Vampirella, especially in this size range. My favorites are the two produced by Mamegyorai, but this one would probably be next. If you have a chance to pick this one up, go for it!
