Just finished reading Hack/Slash vs Vampirella #4 which was released yesterday (1/10/2018) by Dynamite Comics. As usual, I’m here to let you know what I thought.
The book’s opening page shows Vampirella trying to recover from the injury she sustained in the prev issue. I loved the second panel; it felt like a callback to the classic Vampirella days. The pose looks like something that would be at home in the old Warren mags. I keep saying it, but it really is refreshing to see a true depiction of Vampirella again with this series.
We’ve seen a lot of action in this series and this issue is no different, but they may have ratcheted up the action even more for this one. We also get some character development as the three main characters relationships to one another evolves. We see Vampirella’s affection for Vlad take on more significance in the story. The Blood Queen recognises this and uses Clad as bait to draw Vampirella to her. Whether her ploy will work remains to be seen. Cassie also reacts to Vampirella and Vlad’s affections, which creates some tension between her and Vampirella.
Rapha Lobosco’s Vampirella is spot-on in this issue with really great panels. His art really captures her in a way that feels real to fans of the character (or at least this one). Everything we’ve gotten recently feels so unrecognizable, it’s great to have a creative team that gets it. I think Lobosco’s art has gotten stronger and stronger as the series has gone on with this being his best to date.
Overall, this has probably been my favorite issue so far. With one more to go, I can’t wait to see how everything plays out. If you haven’t been reading this, I definitely recommend catching up on it or picking up the trade when it comes out!
