The Current State of Vampirella

For my first real post, I’d like to look at the current state of Vampirella and give my opinion of it.  I’ll be posting more detailed opinion pieces on specific aspects of the character in the future, but for now I’ll start with a general overview.

To be blunt, Vampirella fans really don’t have much to choose from right now.  Dynamite will release the fourth issue of their current Vampirella on-going title this week.  So far, I have yet to see any character that resembles Vampirella in this series.  Nobody acts like Vampirella or looks like Vampirella. Aside from that, I find the story hard to follow. I know this is a horror character we’re talking about, but this story is just too weird.  It makes no sense as a Vampirella story.

Issue two of Dynamite’s Kiss/Vampirella is also being released this week.  After one issue, I can at least say this mini series has more potential at this point.  It definitely isn’t classic Vampirella, but what can you expect?  It’s a crossover with Kiss. I think it will be fun for what it is, but the on-going title should be held to a higher standard.

Long gone are the days of the Warren Vampirella masterpieces.  I thought the Harris years were hit or miss.  Dynamite has put out some very high quality Vampirella books (Nancy Collins’ run is one of my all time favorites), but in recent years they have really lost their way.  I have some ideas on why this is, which I’ll talk about in another post.  For now, suffice it to say the current state of affairs is pretty depressing for longtime Vampirella fans, and I seriously doubt there are many new fans signing on for this stuff.

Check back in a few days when I’ll review this week’s new releases!
